Street Photography #1 (Ricoh GR II)
I’ve been taking some (out of focus, blurry, overexposed) film photos using E’s camera for the last couple months and that’s been really fun, so I was interested in something that would be less fragile and was specifically for street photography.
Got a digital camera (Ricoh GRII) recently for the purposes of learning to take street photographs. I’ve always liked street photography way more than landscape photography because it feels way more dynamic — people are walking, talking, and in all kinds of motion.
The GR II has no viewfinder, fits in a pocket (this is most important since I want to be able to take it on bike rides), is considered a ‘legit’ camera while also not being the latest model and not being insanely expensive.
I have no idea what I’m doing yet, but here are some photos I took over the last few weeks. A lot of them are literally shot from the hip. I ended up with 400-ish photos, and then went through and whittled down some of the ones I liked and tried editing them in Apple’s Photos app (I also have no idea what I’m doing with editing).
The next step? To actually learn the foundations of photography. I know the rule of thirds and not much more. I’ve kind of picked up some half-understanding of aperture/shutter-speed/ISO and that you need a balance among the three, but I don’t really grasp it yet. And also, I want to figure out how to focus on the good stuff using the camera when shooting from the hip! Most of the 400 photos I took, plus some of the ones below, aren’t focused where I’d like them to be.
